In one of the sport’s most thrilling games ever, Argentina defeated France on penalties to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Sunday. Argentina prevailed 4-2 on penalties following a 3-3 deadlock after extra time.
Messi scored twice during the game, with the 108th-minute goal appearing to give Argentina the victory. However, Kylian Mbappé completed his triple trick by scoring on a penalty kick in the 118th minute.
Although Mbappe scored twice in a two-minute span late in the second half, the first coming from the penalty spot, to force extra time, Angel Di Maria’s 2-0 score had already been established.
Messi scored in the second overtime period, but France won a penalty, which Mbappe converted once more to equalize the score at three points and force a sudden-death shootout.
Mbappe converted France’s first penalty in the shootout, but Argentina won 4-2. Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouamani both missed.
Mbappe received some solace in that he won the Golden Boot for the tournament thanks to his eight goals.
